Stamp Category: Commemorative
Value: 73¢ First Class Mail Rate (Forever)
First Day of Issue: August 1, 2024
First Day City: Indianapolis, Indiana
Quantity Issued: 45,000,000
Printed by: Banknote Corporation of America

Why the stamps were issued: To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the tabletop roleplaying game and worldwide phenomenon, Dungeons & Dragons.

About the stamp designs: They picture 10 different designs showcasing characters, creatures, and encounters from Dungeons & Dragons. The selvage of the pane of 20 pictures a party of adventurers fighting a dragon, a gold 20-sided die (d20), and an example of a Dungeons & Dragons map.

First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony took place at Lucas Oil Stadium during Gen Con Indy 2024, a gaming convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.

History the stamps represent: Dungeons & Dragons (D&D or DnD) is a tabletop role-playing game created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson in 1974. Since then, it has become incredibly popular worldwide and the subject of countless novels, video games, movies, and more. In 2024, the US Postal Service celebrated the 50th anniversary of the game with 10 new Forever stamps picturing creatures, characters, and magic from Dungeons & Dragons.

It may be “just a game,” but playing Dungeons & Dragons has many benefits. Players practice skills such as simple mathematics, creative problem-solving, storytelling, and (most importantly) teamwork. Best of all, because dungeon masters (the people who organize and run games) can alter stories almost limitlessly to suit players at the table, Dungeons & Dragons can be played by people of all ages and abilities. Plus, there are always new stories and reference materials being published, making it nearly impossible to get bored.

As of 2024, over 50 million people around the world had played Dungeons & Dragons. It’s a great way to make friends and get away from the stresses of everyday life. Thanks to the internet, even if you can’t find a group to play Dungeons & Dragons with in-person, you can still play online. Or, enjoy one of the many Dungeons and Dragons videos on YouTube, Twitch, and other platforms. Dungeons & Dragons really has taken the world by storm since 1974!
