About the Horses set: Includes five designs picturing photographs of different horses in profile by Stephanie Moon and Karen Wegehenkel.
History the stamp represents: Horses have been part of the entertainment industry for hundreds of years. At first, they were only used in live performances, but, in the early 1900s, they began to appear on the silver screen. You might remember big names like Trigger and Mr. Ed, but there have been countless others, both in the spotlight and in the background.
Many different horse breeds are used in Hollywood motion pictures, depending on the part they need to play. Sometimes, these horses are purchased or loaned from ranches near where a movie is being filmed. However, most of the time, the horses come from dedicated facilities that specialize in training the animals to perform on screen.
There are two main types of horses used in film. The first is called an actor horse. These animals are trained to be ridden by actors that might not have riding experience. The horse must be calm, reliable, intelligent, and patient. After all, they often perform the same actions over and over again until the director is satisfied. The second type is a stunt or action horse. These animals must be brave, athletic, and trustworthy. They perform stunts such as running through fire or falling on command. No matter what, all performing horses are carefully monitored to keep them safe, happy, and healthy on the job.
