About the stamp design: Pictures a photograph of a gondola wheel at night by Pamela Hennessey.

First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at the South Mississippi Summer Fair in Biloxi, Mississippi.

About the Carnival Nights set: Includes 10 stamps picturing different photographs of carnival rides lit up in a rainbow of colors.

History the stamp represents: When most people think of a traveling carnival, they think of the thrilling rides. However, one of the other iconic pieces of the carnival experience is the games. These games are usually simple in concept, but quite tricky to win. That’s why winners often receive an impressive prize such as a giant teddy bear. This accomplishment has been popular with young men trying to impress their date.

Games vary between carnivals, but some of the most widespread include Ring Toss, Balloon Pop, and Jacob’s Ladder. These are also some of the toughest to win. Luckily, there are ways to improve your odds of winning. For Ring Toss, throw the ring as flat as possible and flick your wrist on release. The resulting spin gives the ring the best chance of landing on top of a bottle. When playing Balloon Pop, balloons may be under-inflated and darts may be dull. Focus more on the strength of your throw rather than accuracy to pop a balloon. To successfully climb Jacob’s Ladder, place your feet on the support ropes rather than the ladder rungs. Then move opposite limbs at the same time (such as right hand, left foot) and shimmy your way up the ladder to avoid tipping over.

Win or lose, playing a carnival game is a fun time for players and spectators. It is a great way to make happy memories with friends and family.
