Why the stamp was issued: To commemorate America’s enjoyment of summer carnivals and their iconic lights and amusement rides.

About the stamp design: Set of 10 stamps picturing different photographs of carnival rides lit up in a rainbow of colors.

First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at the South Mississippi Summer Fair in Biloxi, Mississippi.

History the stamp represents: Carnivals have been around since the late 19th century and were inspired by the Midway Plaisance of the 1893 Columbian Exposition. They include amusement rides, games of chance and skill, mouthwatering food, bright and colorful lights, and more.

Today, traveling carnivals are not usually stand-alone attractions. Instead, they are part of larger celebrations such as state or county fairs, small-town field days, or other similar events. They are enjoyed by people of all ages, but are especially fun for children and teenagers who enjoy winning game prizes and getting a thrill from rides that drop them from great heights or spin them around at dizzying speeds. And, of course, visitors have to sample as many tasty treats as possible. The food stands usually have special snacks you can only get from a carnival or fair.

Whether on a family outing or a trip with friends, going to the carnival at night is especially fun. Everything is aglow with colorful flashing lights and the air is filled with the sounds of laughter and lively music, as well as the smells of delicious food. In 2024, the US Postal Service issued 10 Forever stamps celebrating Carnival Nights. They capture the excitement and freedom of the summer months when everyone can sit back, relax, and enjoy themselves while making memories that will last a lifetime.
