History the stamp represents: The 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition (Chicago World’s Fair) was the event of the century. It showcased amazing new technologies, introduced several famous foods we all know today, and entertained the masses with acts from across the globe. The exposition inspired countless new ideas, including the concept of carnivals and fairs.
The Columbian Exposition was the first world’s fair to dedicate a separate area for amusements. That area was known as the Midway Plaisance (origin of the term “midway” in American English). It was home to the exposition’s sideshows and, of course, the famous Ferris wheel constructed by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. The attraction was 264 feet high and included 36 cars, each holding up to 40 people! Entrepreneur and showman George C. Tilyou was one of many who attended the exposition. He later credited the midway carnival with inspiring him to create one of America’s first major amusement parks – Steeplechase Park in Coney Island, New York City.
It's always fun to discover unexpected pieces of US history in events we are already familiar with. Who knew that we might never have enjoyed the fun and excitement of fairs and carnivals without the 1893 Columbian Exposition?!
