First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite National Park, California.

History the stamps represent: In 1947, Ansel Adams received a Guggenheim Fellowship to visit every US National Park. That fellowship led him to Alaska, which he considered the closest “to the wilderness perfection [he] sought.”

Adams spent a week at the ranger cabin near Wonder Lake in Denali National Park in the summer of 1947. Mount McKinley (as it was known at the time) was almost constantly shrouded in clouds. Then one evening, he focused his camera on the mountain before going to bed. He awoke at midnight and waited to take the photo at sunrise. At 1:30 a.m., Adams watched the peak turn pink, then the sky turned gold, and before long, the entire mountain was bathed in sunlight. His timing was perfect, as the mountain was once again hidden by clouds within thirty minutes. The photo he captured that day, Denali and Wonder Lake, Denali National Park, Alaska, is featured on this 2024 US stamp.

Of the experience, Adams said, “I saw more clearly the value of true wilderness and the danger of diluting its finest areas.” He “resolved to dedicate as much of [his] time and energy to it as [he] could.”

While working on President Jimmy Carter’s official White House portrait in 1979, he expressed his concerns. The following year, Carter passed the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, the largest single expansion of protected land in history.
