History the stamps represent: Some of Ansel Adams’s most famous photos captured Yosemite’s dramatic Half Dome. He photographed the rock formation throughout his life from different angles using different techniques.

Adams first photographed Half Dome when he was 14 with his Kodak Brownie camera. His favorite photo was one taken upside down when he fell off a stump!

Adams returned to the same spot in 1927 to capture one of his most well-known photos, Monolith, the Face of Half Dome, Yosemite National Park. On a brisk April morning, Adams set out on a half-day hike. He then waited two hours for the sunlight to hit the rock perfectly. Having taken several photos along the hike, he only had two glass plates left to capture this scene. He first used a yellow filter but switched to a red one, which made the sky appear black, as he envisioned it. This was the first time he used some of these techniques, adopting his photographic principles.

Another decade later, Adams captured the photo featured on this 2024 stamp, Half Dome, Merced river, Winter, Yosemite National Park, California. He took this photo in 1938 while crossing the Old Sentinel Bridge. The bridge was later replaced with a newer one, from which thousands still often attempt to re-create Adams’s famous photograph.
