These stamps began a multi-year series to focus attention on the dire plight of many of Earth’s species. New York, Geneva, and Vienna will each feature four different species per year. Many fauna and flora are threatened by the destruction of habitats from population growth and environmental pollution or by unrestricted exploitation. A Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species was drafted in 1973 and became international law in 1975. The U.N. monitors the provisions of the Convention that prohibits or regulates trade in endangered species.
American artist Norman Adams illustrated New York’s selection of the Queensland (Australian) hairy-nosed wombat, the American whooping crane, the giant clam of the Indian and Pacific oceans, and the giant sable antelope of Africa.
The F.s. 0,80 stamps depict: the short-tailed Tibetan Macaque, Caribbean Flamingo, Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing, and the Persian Fallow Deer.
