About the stamp design:  Pictures the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, a significant landmark to the Omaha, Nebraska, community.  Design shows a photograph of the bridge.

First Day City:  Issued on August 24th in Portland, Connecticut, not far from the Arrigoni Bridge.  There was no official First Day of Issue Ceremony, though the Connecticut Cover Club held an unofficial one at the Brownstone Intermediate School in Portland.

About the Bridges set:  Intended for use by bulk mailers to cover the Presorted First Class Mail Rate.  Each stamp pictures a different bridge that has become a significant landmark to its local community.  Some are modern, others are historic, and they range in use from car-carrying to pedestrian only.  All four stamps picture existing photographs of the bridges.

History the stamp represents:  Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge crosses the Missouri River and connects Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Omaha, Nebraska.  It was named after Senator Bob Kerrey of Nebraska, who was responsible for raising $18 million in federal funding for the bridge in 2000.

Construction of Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge began October 26, 2006, and it was open to foot traffic September 28, 2008.  The bridge is 3,000 feet long and is supported by two 200-foot-tall towers, which hold it 52 feet above the river below.  The Nebraska side of the bridge includes scenic Omaha Plaza and is connected to over 150 miles of nature trails.

In 2015, Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge opened its own Twitter account (@BobTBridge), which is operated by the Omaha Convention & Visitors Bureau.  It encourages visitors to take photographs while walking on “Bob” to share with others (nicknamed “Bobbing”).  A trend emerged where people put one foot on the Iowa side and one foot on the Nebraska side so as to be in both states at once.  Giving the bridge a personality (and even a blue troll friend named “OMAR” that made “Bob” home after traveling the country) is a fun way Omaha has increased visitor interactions and ensured their trip to the city is a memorable one.
