About the Life Magnified Set:  These 20 stamps were issued to showcase life undetectable by the human eye alone.  All 20 stamps picture photographs taken using special techniques and the aid of a microscope.  The set celebrates the beauty and complexity of microscopic organisms and parts of organisms, the study of which have had various impacts on humans.

History the stamp represents:  Feathers may seem like simple structures, but when examined under a microscope, there are many complex parts to them.  After all, it took millions of years (starting with dinosaurs) for them to evolve into the forms we see on birds today.

Birds are equipped with several different types of feathers.  Some are small and fluffy to help keep them warm in colder temperatures by trapping warm air close to the body.  Others are long and sleek with microscopic interlocking barbs that allow them to keep their shape and block out water and air.  You may have seen this Velcro-like action when picking up a discarded feather and running your fingers down the side to “reconnect” the gaps.

Depending on the species and age, birds may have more or less of each feather type.  For example, baby waterfowl are born covered in downy feathers that keep them warm swimming and foraging alongside their parents.  However, baby songbirds are born completely without feathers as they stay warm under their parents in the nest.

Long, stiff wing and tail feathers are essential for flight.  The wing feathers provide lift while the tail feathers allow the bird to change direction.  It is easy to see both in action on large birds like macaws.  It truly is amazing the many purposes feathers serve.
