Why the stamp was issued: According to the USPS, this stamp (along with the others in the Waterfalls set) were issued to celebrate “the variety and beauty of American waterfalls.”
About the stamp design: This stamp pictures an existing photograph of LaSalle Canyon Falls in Illinois along with its name and the state it’s located in (text is below the image).
First Day City: Issued in Yellowstone National Park, appropriate considering one of the stamps pictures a major waterfall in the park.
About the Waterfalls set: The USPS issued the 2023 Waterfalls set to showcase a small handful of the 17,000 documented waterfalls in America. Each one has something special about it that draws visitors from all walks of life to witness its natural beauty and power. These stamps include small, lesser-known waterfalls like Sunbeam Falls in Washington State as well as huge, worldwide attractions like Niagara Falls in New York.
Here's a complete list of the waterfalls pictured in the set:
a) Deer Creek Falls, Arizona
b) Nevada Falls, California
c) Harrison Falls, Pennsylvania
d) Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River, Wyoming
e) Waimoku Falls, Hawaii
f) Stewart Falls, Utah
g) Niagara Falls, New York
h) Dark Hollow Falls, Virginia
i) Grotto Falls, Tennessee
j) Sunbeam Falls, Washington
k) LaSalle Canyon Falls, Illinois
l) Upper Falls, North Carolina
History the stamp represents: Starved Rock State Park in Illinois offers wonderful views of the Illinois River and its surrounding scenery. That includes breathtaking sights such as LaSalle Canyon and its impressive waterfall.
To get to LaSalle Canyon Waterfall, hikers must begin from Parkman’s Plain parking lot where the River Trail begins. After a short walk, visitors reach a set of stairs leading down to the river’s edge. Along the way are several overlooks of the surrounding forest and small glances of the river below. Once at the bottom, hikers follow the trail marked LaSalle Canyon, which winds along the base of tall sandstone cliffs. It is a striking change from the earlier portion of the trail. From there, LaSalle Canyon comes up quickly, along with its aforementioned waterfall. The nice thing about LaSalle Canyon Waterfall is it has at least a small stream of water flowing all year long. In fact, in the winter, it is arguably more breathtaking. The water often freezes into a magnificent ice waterfall, which contrasts strongly with the surrounding scenery.
Many visitors to Starved Rock State Park are surprised to see how different LaSalle Canyon looks from anywhere else in Illinois. Its sandstone cliffs were formed by prehistoric glaciers and rising tides, making it easy to see why the park is the number one attraction in the state.
