Why the stamp was issued:  According to the USPS, this stamp (along with the others in the Waterfalls set) were issued to celebrate “the variety and beauty of American waterfalls.”

About the stamp design:  This stamp pictures an existing photograph of Waimoku Falls in Hawaii along with its name and the state it’s located in (text is below the image).

First Day City:  Issued in Yellowstone National Park, appropriate considering one of the stamps pictures a major waterfall in the park.

About the Waterfalls set:  The USPS issued the 2023 Waterfalls set to showcase a small handful of the 17,000 documented waterfalls in America.  Each one has something special about it that draws visitors from all walks of life to witness its natural beauty and power.  These stamps include small, lesser-known waterfalls like Sunbeam Falls in Washington State as well as huge, worldwide attractions like Niagara Falls in New York.

Here's a complete list of the waterfalls pictured in the set:

a)  Deer Creek Falls, Arizona
b)  Nevada Fall, California
c)  Harrison Falls, Pennsylvania
d)  Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River, Wyoming
e)  Waimoku Falls, Hawaii
f)  Stewart Falls, Utah
g)  Niagara Falls, New York
h)  Dark Hollow Falls, Virginia
i)  Grotto Falls, Tennessee
j)  Sunbeam Falls, Washington
k)  LaSalle Canyon Waterfall, Illinois
l)  Upper Falls, North Carolina

History the stamp represents:  The state of Hawaii is one of the most beautiful areas in the United States.  Its warm tropical climate, rich cultural history, and abundant wildlife make it a destination for millions of people every year.  While there is plenty to enjoy on the beaches, some of Hawaii’s greatest natural treasures lie further away from the shore – waterfalls.

The second-largest island in the state, Maui has more than its fair share of waterfalls.  These include the well-known Waimoku Falls.  This waterfall is located at the end of the Pipiwai Trail within Haleakalā National Park.  The hike is a favorite among Maui’s visitors and is about four miles round-trip.  Hikers will gain 650 feet in elevation and see not one, but two stunning waterfalls.  (The nearly 200-foot-tall Makahiku Falls is the first on the Pipiwai Trail.). There is also a massive banyan tree and a stretch about halfway along the trail that winds through a lush bamboo forest.  On windy days, the bamboo stalks brush against each other and create a sound unlike any other.

Makahiku Falls and the other stopping points are impressive, but still not quite as awe-inspiring as the hike’s final destination – Waimoku Falls.  This waterfall is 400 feet tall, one of the tallest on Maui.  The best time to go is on a bright sunny day, but there really is no bad time to take in this iconic waterfall.
