Why the stamp was issued: According to the USPS, this stamp (along with the others in the Waterfalls set) were issued to celebrate “the variety and beauty of American waterfalls.”

About the stamp design: This stamp pictures an existing photograph of Nevada Falls in California along with its name and the state it’s located in (text is below the image).

First Day City: Issued in Yellowstone National Park, appropriate considering one of the stamps pictures a major waterfall in the park.

About the Waterfalls set: The USPS issued the 2023 Waterfalls set to showcase a small handful of the 17,000 documented waterfalls in America. Each one has something special about it that draws visitors from all walks of life to witness its natural beauty and power. These stamps include small, lesser-known waterfalls like Sunbeam Falls in Washington State as well as huge, worldwide attractions like Niagara Falls in New York.

Here's a complete list of the waterfalls pictured in the set:

a) Deer Creek Falls, Arizona
b) Nevada Falls, California
c) Harrison Falls, Pennsylvania
d) Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River, Wyoming
e) Waimoku Falls, Hawaii
f) Stewart Falls, Utah
g) Niagara Falls, New York
h) Dark Hollow Falls, Virginia
i) Grotto Falls, Tennessee
j) Sunbeam Falls, Washington
k) LaSalle Canyon Falls, Illinois
l) Upper Falls, North Carolina

History the stamp represents: Yosemite National Park in California is home to a number of stunning waterfalls. Some flow year-round, while others disappear after the spring thaw ends. Many of these waterfalls can be viewed from the valley below or at various lookout points around the park. However, the best way to experience them is by following the hiking trails within the park.

One of the most well-known waterfalls in Yosemite National Park is Nevada Fall. It is found at the west end of Little Yosemite Valley, just below the granite dome known as Liberty Cap. Nevada Fall is on the Merced River and measures 594 feet from where it tumbles off the cliff to the valley below. It is recognizable by its bent shape and the impact it makes with the cliff halfway down, creating a wide band of mist. The waterfall earned its name “Nevada” (Spanish for “snowy”) from this phenomenon as some say the whitewater and mist resemble an avalanche.

To hike to Nevada Fall, visitors take the Mist and/or John Muir Trail loop from Yosemite Valley. The first mile of trail is paved and leads to nearby 317-foot-high Vernal Fall, another worthwhile waterfall to visit. The top of Nevada Fall comes into view about two miles further along the trail. It can be strenuous to hike both waterfalls as the trails are uphill, but it is well worth it for the spectacular views.
