First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in Woodburn, Oregon, at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival, an annual event celebrating tulips and other elements of Dutch culture (such as wooden shoes).
History the stamp represents: Tulips are one of the most beloved spring flowers around the world. Their appearance symbolizes the end of winter and many people go outside to enjoy their beauty. Many countries host annual tulip festivals to celebrate these colorful blooms. Since the flowers have long been associated with Holland, tulip festivals are often accompanied by demonstrations of Dutch culture and traditions.
In 2023, the US issued 10 Forever stamps featuring photographs of different tulips by Denise Ippolito. The stamps were issued on April 5, just in time for the tulip season to begin in many areas of the US. Tulips bloom at slightly different times depending on their latitude. Those further from the equator bloom later than those that are closer. For countries like Australia located in the southern hemisphere, tulips bloom in September and October since our seasons are flipped.
Today, some of the most beautiful tulips in the world can be viewed at: Emirgan Park (Istanbul, Turkey); Corbett Gardens (Bowral, Australia); Holland Ridge Farms (Cream Ridge, New Jersey); Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden (Srinagar, Jammu, and Kashmir, India); Keukenhof Estate (Keukenhof, Netherlands); Pashley Manor (Sussex and Kent, England); Skagit Valley, Washington; Ottawa, Canada; Tonami Tulip Park (Tonami, Japan); and Holland, Michigan. It is amazing to think that tulips started out in Central Asia, made their way to Holland, and can now be enjoyed almost anywhere.
