Why the stamp was issued: Issued alongside the 2023 Kitten and Heart stamp as part of the annual Love Series. 2023 marked 50 years since the first Love stamp was issued.
About the stamp design: Pictures a puppy with its paws resting on a red heart with “LOVE” in all caps on a pink background. The design was taken from an oil painting on wood panel by Chris Buzelli. The art was then scanned and digitally edited for use on the stamp.
First Day City: Austin, Texas, during their “Austin Pets Alive!” event. The USPS chose these event because “They recently celebrated the 100,000th rescue since their nonprofit was founded – a demonstration of LOVE in action.”
About the Love Series: The US Love Series began in 1973, with a new issue appearing almost every year since then (usually just in time for use on Valentine’s Day mailings). 2023 marked the 50-year anniversary of the Love Series.
History the stamp represents: Dogs have been called man’s best friend for centuries. They are loyal companions and can even perform important jobs for us. And, of course, dogs aren’t shy about expressing affection.
There have been some questions about whether dogs can feel or show love like humans do. Psychologists have found that both our species share similar hormonal and brain functions relation to the emotion. In fact, when MRI scans were performed on dogs, their positive brain activity was seen to increase when exposed to the smell of their owners. The dogs were also given other scents to interact with, but none generated as positive an effect as that of their humans – not even food!
While other animals might be more reserved in expressing their love for humans, it’s fairly easy to tell when our dogs are showing affection. They wag their tails, lean on our legs, follow us around the house, sleep next to us, and lick our faces. One of the most significant expressions of love, however, is eye contact. Dogs only maintain eye contact with people they trust completely, as prolonged eye contact is often seen as a challenge in the dog world.
Dogs are pack animals and seek out the company of others to feel safe and happy. Few things are more gratifying than knowing your dog considers you a packmate they want to be close to.
