History the stamp represents: If there’s a pile of dirt around, Pigpen will be in it! He appreciates the finer things in life, like soot, dust, mud, and grime. Despite his outward appearance, he always carries himself with dignity, knowing full well that he has affixed to him the “dust of countless ages.”
Most of the kids give Pigpen a hard time for the perpetual cloud of dust that surrounds him – they nicknamed him Pigpen after all. Charlie Brown is the only one in the bunch who accepts Pigpen for who he is and has even defended his friend’s uncleanliness.
Pigpen has been known to play the drums and the double bass. He plays third base on the group’s baseball team and hopes to one day become class president. Pigpen is a good friend to everyone, treating them as he’d want to be treated.
Dirt and dust seem to be attracted to Pigpen like a magnet. But he has been clean on a few occasions. One day he got caught in the rain and he was disappointed that the rain had washed away what he spent all day accumulating. But it never takes long for the dirt to find its way back to him. Pigpen takes pride in it, once saying, “As the duck is drawn to the pond, and as the rabbit is drawn to the brier patch, so am I drawn to the mud puddle.”
