About the stamp design:  Pictures a photograph of the Mississippi River as it travels through a lush bayou in Mississippi.

First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in Memphis, Tennessee, at Beale Street Landing overlooking the Mississippi River.

About the Mighty Mississippi set:  Includes 10 stamps picturing scenic views of the Mississippi River from the different states it passes through on its way from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico:  Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

The designs picture the quiet scenic views of the Upper Mississippi as well as the bustling transportation highway that is the Lower Mississippi.  There’s also a stamp picturing the Great River Road.  This series of connected roads follows the Mississippi River all the way from Minnesota to Louisiana.  One design pictures a vintage steamboat, an iconic symbol of the American South.  There’s also a modern barge transporting goods, an impressive bridge spanning the width of the river, and stunning wetland habitat supported by the river’s floodplain.

The reverse side of the pane of stamps pictures a map of the central United States showing the Mississippi River’s course and its major tributaries.

History the stamp represents:  Did you know the state of Mississippi is named after the river?  The Mississippi River defines nearly all of the western border of the state, including the famously historic city of Vicksburg.

Vicksburg is located in Warren County, Mississippi, and is perched on a high bluff on the east bank of the Mississippi River.  It was founded by French colonists in 1719 and officially incorporated in 1825.  In July 1863, it was the site of the famous Battle of Vicksburg and subsequent surrender to Union general Ulysses S. Grant, marking a major turning point in the American Civil War.

During the 1800s, Vicksburg was one of the many Southern cities in which “King Cotton” reigned supreme.  However, after World War I, an event known as the “Great Migration” led many African Americans to leave the South in droves, heading for the industrialized North.  During the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, Vicksburg’s high elevation led many people to gather in the city to avoid the floodwaters.

Today, Vicksburg is home to many historical sites and fun places to visit.  One special point of interest is the Vicksburg Riverfront Murals.  This series of murals began in 2002 and finished in 2009, with each highly detailed painting commemorating a moment in history that made Vicksburg what it is today.
