Why the stamp was issued:  To honor the Mississippi River and the impact it has on the state of Missouri.

About the stamp design:  Pictures a photograph of the famous Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, as viewed from the Mississippi River.

First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in Memphis, Tennessee, at Beale Street Landing overlooking the Mississippi River.

About the Mighty Mississippi set:  Includes 10 stamps picturing scenic views of the Mississippi River from the different states it passes through on its way from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico:  Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

The designs picture the quiet scenic views of the Upper Mississippi as well as the bustling transportation highway that is the Lower Mississippi.  There’s also a stamp picturing the Great River Road.  This series of connected roads follows the Mississippi River all the way from Minnesota to Louisiana.  One design pictures a vintage steamboat, an iconic symbol of the American South.  There’s also a modern barge transporting goods, an impressive bridge spanning the width of the river, and stunning wetland habitat supported by the river’s floodplain.

The reverse side of the pane of stamps pictures a map of the central United States showing the Mississippi River’s course and its major tributaries.

History the stamp represents:  Missouri marks an important point in the journey of the Mississippi River.  It’s the place where the Upper Mississippi ends and the Lower Mississippi begins.  Perhaps the best example of this is in St. Louis, just south of where the Missouri and Illinois Rivers meet the Mississippi.

Everyone knows St. Louis is home to the famous Gateway Arch, but there are also a number of other great places to visit nearby.  Sometimes called the Confluence Corridor, the area where the three big rivers connect features scenic byways, migratory bird sanctuaries, conservation areas, state parks, historical sites, and more.

The Columbia Bottom Conservation Area is located just north of St. Louis and encompasses 4,256 acres.  It was once thought to be a good location for the town of Columbia, Missouri, but it was soon discovered that the area was a wetland, making building there impractical.  However, it did turn out to be good land for farming.  Today, the conservation area includes plenty of room for boating, fishing, and birdwatching activities.  In fact, it is a popular stop for trips organized by the Audubon Society of Mississippi.  The area is especially noteworthy for its populations of snowy egret.  Next time you’re in St. Louis, be sure to stop by!
