About the Mighty Mississippi set: Includes 10 stamps picturing scenic views of the Mississippi River from the different states it passes through on its way from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
The designs picture the quiet scenic views of the Upper Mississippi as well as the bustling transportation highway that is the Lower Mississippi. There’s also a stamp picturing the Great River Road. This series of connected roads follows the Mississippi River all the way from Minnesota to Louisiana. One design pictures a vintage steamboat, an iconic symbol of the American South. There’s also a modern barge transporting goods, an impressive bridge spanning the width of the river, and stunning wetland habitat supported by the river’s floodplain.
The reverse side of the pane of stamps pictures a map of the central United States showing the Mississippi River’s course and its major tributaries.
History the stamp represents: When most people think of the Mississippi River, they think of the lower portion in the southern United States. However, there are many hundreds of miles of the river to explore further north. This area is known as the Upper Mississippi and includes everything north of St. Louis, Missouri. It encompasses parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois.
One special scenic vista on the Upper Mississippi is located in Pikes Peak State Park in Iowa. Like the famous Pikes Peak in Colorado, this park is home to an especially high cliff named after Zebulon Pike. The bluff in Iowa overlooks a stunning view of the Mississippi River and is surrounded by nearly 1,000 acres of state park lands. It features many recreational opportunities for visitors to enjoy such as miles of hiking trails, campgrounds, and special areas for mountain biking.
There are plenty more scenic and historic areas around Pikes Peak State Park. You can visit Effigy Mounds National Monument, Yellow River State Forest, the Driftless Area National Wildlife Refuge, and, of course, Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. As of 2022, a trail system was being developed between thee sites so visitors may enjoy the beauty of nature to the fullest.
