History the stamp represents: In the Star Wars universe, we’re used to seeing astromech droids like R2-D2 or protocol droids like C-3PO. However, there are many other interesting types out there. For example, assassin droids.
In 2020, Star Wars fans were introduced to the assassin droid IG-11 in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. This droid is one of many bounty hunters sent after a target known as “the Child.” The main character of the show, the Mandalorian, is another one of those bounty hunters. He meets IG-11 at the place where the Child is being kept. The two end up working together to take out the many armed guards surrounding the place. In the end, the Mandalorian betrays IG-11, killing the droid and taking the Child himself.
IG-11 shows up later in the series when the Mandalorian and his friends are in dire straights while trying to protect the Child from the First Order. It is revealed that IG-11 was reprogrammed as a nurse droid. His new primary function is to protect the Child. However, the Mandolorian believes droids can’t be made to forget their original programming so easily. IG-11 later sacrifices himself so the Child can escape, and the Mandalorian changes his opinion of droids.
IG-11 is a perfect example of Star Wars addressing real-life questions through entertainment. In this case, the incredible power nurture has on one’s character.
