About the Winter Scenes set:  A set of 10 stamp designs picturing different photographs of animals, buildings, and landscapes in winter.  Meant as reminders that winter isn’t all cold and snow, it has moments of real beauty, too.

History the stamp represents:  When it comes to shooting beautiful landscapes, many photographers avoid winter conditions at all costs.  However, with a few considerations in mind, you can produce some truly stunning photographs in winter.

Before going out on a winter shoot, it is important to take several things into account.  The most obvious is that temperatures will be cold.  It’s necessary to dress for the weather, meaning many layers and a warm, waterproof pair of boots and gloves.  Cold temperatures can also drain the battery life of your camera more quickly.  This makes it essential to bring extra batteries.  An insulated bag can also be helpful for protecting your camera from the elements while setting up shots or moving to a new location.

Snow and ice transform landscapes into wonderlands of unusual shapes that sparkle in the light.  Some of the best times to capture the beauty of these scenes are right around sunrise or sunset – known as “golden hour.”  In the winter, the tilt of the Earth in relation to the sun creates shorter days and more even lighting.  This means fewer harsh shadows, so there are actually more good times to shoot during winter days!

When you look at your winter photos, you will realize all your preparations were worth it.  The golden hour really does produce the best pictures.
