History the stamp represents:  Living gratefully can look different for everyone.  But, for some, a grateful life can simply come from recognizing that each day is a gift.  A.J. Jacobs, an author living in New York City, wanted to fight against the brain’s predisposition to negativity.  He decided to live more gratefully.

Jacobs started the journey by thanking everyone involved in his morning coffee.  He started with thanking his coffee server and continued all the way to the inventor of the plastic lid on his to-go cup.  Jacobs’ journey can be read about in his book Thanks a Thousand.  In his blog, he boils down his experience into five actions to live more gratefully.

First thing Jacobs learned – look up; see the people who you are interacting with.  Remember that these are humans, not machines.  The nest two go together – “stop and smell the roses” and “look for the masterpieces.”  Life is busy, but nearly everyone has a few minutes to be mindful of their surroundings.  There are millions of little inventions we use everyday that make life easier, so appreciate them.

The fourth lesson Jacobs learned was “fake it till you feel it.”  Even when tired and grouchy, it’s easy to say “thank you.”  He ended up thanking over one thousand people for his coffee!  His last lesson – remember how much goes into a fairly simple thing.
