2020 Bugs Bunny

  • Celebrates Bugs Bunny’s 80th birthday with 10 stamp designs

Stamp Category:
Commemorative
Value:  55¢ First Class Mail Rate (Forever)
First Day of Issue:  July 27, 2020
First Day City:  Burbank, California
Quantity Issued:  50,000,000
Printed by:  Banknote Corporation of America
Printing Method:  Offset
Format:  Panes of 20
Tagging:  Phosphor, overall

Why the stamps were issued:  To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Bugs Bunny’s official screen debut.

About the stamp designs:  Each stamp pictures a different one of Bugs Bunny’s iconic personas.  The artwork came directly from Warner Bros. animation artists who also created the sketches on the reverse side of the stamp pane of 20.

First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic with a First Day of Issue postmark from Burbank, California, home of Warner Bros.

History the stamp represents:  Few cartoon characters ae as remembered and loved as Bugs Bunny.  His antics have been making people of all ages laugh since he first appeared on screen in A Wild Hare in 1940.  While his design has been updated a bit over the years, his famous Brooklyn accent and catchphrase, “Eh… What’s up, doc?” have remained.  As has his trickster personality.

One of the most important parts of Bugs’ crafty nature is his many elaborate disguises.  In fact, the best Bugs Bunny cartoons of all time feature Bugs wearing some sort of unusual outfit and acting like someone else.  These disguises are used to great comedic effect, especially when Bugs uses them to outwit and embarrass his enemies.

In 2020, the United States Postal Service issued a set of 10 new Forever stamps picturing some of Bugs’ most iconic costumes.  These included: a barber, basketball player, Hollywood star, court jester, Brünnhilde, mermaid, pianist, superhero, baseball player, and Marine Corps master sergeant.  This was the second time in US history that Bugs was featured on a postage stamp.  In 1997, he became the first cartoon character pictured on a US stamp, as well as the first self-adhesive souvenir sheet produced in America.

Bugs Bunny was the product of several animators’ dreams and is a true pop-culture icon.  There have been many other popular cartoons over the years, but none have been quite as funny and charismatic as Bugs.
