First Day City:  According to the USPS, Charleston, West Virginia, was chosen for the First Day of Issue postmark because of the city’s famous Capitol Market, a year-round farmers’ market and nonprofit organization.  There was no First Day of Issue Ceremony due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

About the Fruits and Vegetables set:  Includes 10 different stamps designs all picturing a different fruit or vegetable still life by Robert Papp.

History the stamp represents:  Few fruits make us think of summer more than strawberries.  Their sweet taste, bright red color, and delectable aroma make them the stars of countless culinary masterpieces throughout the year.  But they are never as good as when you pick them fresh on a warm, sunny summer day.

It is hard to resist eating your entire harvest on the way home from strawberry picking… But when you do, the resulting foods make it worth the wait.  Many people make their strawberries into jams or jellies, pies, or even ice cream.  But one of America’s favorite ways to eat fresh summer strawberries is by making them into strawberry shortcake.

There are many different preparations of strawberry shortcake, whether it be making an actual cake, or something more simple.  Many families choose the simple method.  This consists of cleaning the strawberries and removing their tops, sprinkling them with a little sugar, and spooning the resulting mixture over fresh-baked biscuits or shortcake.  And, of course, however the dish is prepared, it is never complete until it is topped with a mound of delicious whipped cream.
