History the stamp represents: The Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) is a botanical garden in Brooklyn, New York, established in 1910. At 52 acres, it includes quite a few specialty gardens, plant collections, and the Steinhardt Conservatory. In total, the BBG has over 14,000 taxa (group of related species) of plants. Over 725,000 people a year come to visit the garden.
The idea to build a park in Brooklyn was first introduced in April 1859. A group of 15 commissioners proposed a number of ideas, but the Civil War prevented any further development. In 1897, Brooklyn reserved 39 acres for a botanic garden, and the BBG was officially opened May 13, 1911.
The Native Flora Garden is the oldest section of the BBG, and has been around since the garden first opened. Today, there are many other specialty sections located within the BBG. These include the Osborne Garden, Cranford Rose Garden, Magnolia Plaza and Plant Collection, Cherry Esplanade, Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, Shakespeare Garden, Fragrance Garden, and more.
The Brooklyn Botanic Garden has developed into a mainstay of the area. It continues to grow and become more impressive as time goes on. Each year, new visitors come to enjoy this oasis of natural beauty inside a bustling city.
