About the Holiday Wreaths set: Includes four designs continuing the tradition of holiday-themed postage stamps, although it’s not technically part of the Traditional or Contemporary Christmas Series. Each of the four stamps pictures a different holiday wreath created by floral artist Laura Dowling and photographed by Kevin Allen. There is a wreath with aspidistra leaves folded to resemble ribbons, gilded pinecone and magnolia pod wreath with red ribbon, red and gold ribbon wreath with dried flowers, and woodland bush ivy wreath with red winterberries.
History the stamp represents: There are many different species of evergreen in the world. Some of the most well known are pine, fir, yew, and holly. These four are the most commonly used for decorations during the holiday season. Whether for Christmas trees, garland, or wreaths, their long-lasting color brightens up any room and creates feelings of holiday cheer.
In 2019, the USPS issued four new season stamps featuring holiday wreaths. Each design showcases a different style. One wreath was made from the leaves of the evergreen plant of the genus Aspidistra. While not traditionally associated with the holiday season, the striking dark green leaves of the plant create a unique wreath anyone would be proud to hang on their door. The floral artist who created the wreath was Laura Dowling. To achieve the look, she took Aspidistra leaves and gently folded and tucked them into one another to resemble ribbons. The end result may only be a single color, but it is no less impressive than a glamorous multi-colored version.
Other holidays have decorations that fade by the end of the season, but this is not the case for winter decorations. Thanks to the use of evergreen plants, everyone’s favorite front door wreaths stay beautiful all the way to spring.
