About the Disney Villains set: Includes 10 stamp designs picturing classic Disney villains: Maleficent, Honest John, Cruella De Vil, Captain Hook, the Queen of Hearts, Lady Tremaine, Ursula, the Queen, Gaston, and Scar. The designs were created in close collaboration with Disney Creative Director David Pacheco and the Walt Disney Studios Ink & Paint Department. They created new art especially for use on the stamps. According to the USPS, these stamps were created to celebrate “the rich legacy of the Walt Disney Studios Ink & Paint Department.”
History the stamp represents: Cruella De Vil is an evil-doer whose very name reveals her personality, “cruel devil.” She lacks morals and preys on the weak and innocent.
Cruella begins One Hundred and One Dalmatians as Anita Radcliffe’s friend from school. However, it quickly becomes obvious she is just using Anita and her husband Roger to get Pongo and Perdita’s (their dalmatians) puppies. When Roger puts his foot down and refuses to sell them, Cruella swears vengeance. She sends her goons, Horace and Jasper, to steal the puppies in the middle of the night.
The puppies are brought to “Hell Hall,” the old De Vil mansion, where 84 more dalmatians are already being kept. Cruella orders Horace and Jasper to kill and skin all the puppies. She hopes to sell coats made from them, but the dogs escape with the help of Pongo and Perdita. The three villains chase the dalmatians across the countryside, but are always one step behind them. Eventually, Cruella’s manic driving ruins her plans and she, Horace, and Jasper crash after falling over a cliff.
While Disney animator Marc Davis’s colleagues criticized him at first for drawing Cruella like a caricature, it turned out that was what made her so popular. Her skeletal frame, enormous fur coat, and striking black and white hair have made her one of Disney’s most iconic villains.
