First Day City: First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in Erin, Wisconsin, during the US Open golf tournament which was held from June 12-18.

About the Have a Ball! set: Emphasizes the popularity of sports in the United States, both as players and spectators. Includes eight stamp designs, each picturing a different ball: football, volleyball, soccer ball, golf ball, baseball, basketball, tennis ball, and kickball.

History the stamp represents: In 1891, physical education teacher Dr. James Naismith was looking for a sport to keep students active during the long Massachusetts winter. The YMCA gym was too small for any existing game, so he made up a new one – basketball.

At first, the object of basketball was to get the ball into one of two peach baskets nailed 10 feet off the ground. A soccer ball was used to play originally, but the sewn laces on the ball made bounce-passing difficult. Eventually, a new ball with no laces was created especially for Naismith’s game. Basketballs started out brown, and in the late 1950s, college basketball coach Tony Hinkle suggested making the balls orange.

Thanks to the YMCA, basketball spread quickly throughout the US and Canada. College basketball was established only a year after Naismith’s first game, and the first national basketball tournament was played in 1937. Today, the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) “March Madness” games are some of the most-watched in all of basketball. This annual championship is a thrilling battle between the best college teams in the nation. Fans often fill out brackets to predict the ultimate winner of the event. This adds excitement and fun to the tournament, making March Madness the highlight of the basketball season.
