2016 89c Henry James
Literary Arts Series

Henry James has earned a reputation for being one of the greatest writers of his generation.  His works are most famous for their  exploration of the interactions between Americans and Europeans.  This “international theme” was characterized by drama, comedy, and tragedy all in one piece of literature.

James officially began his career as a writer in 1863 when one of his theater reviews was published in a Boston newspaper.  His first short story came a year later.  After that, James began writing for well-known national journals like The Atlantic Monthly and The Nation.  It was around this time he made the decision to permanently move to London.

James’ work is often admired for its realistic representation of human nature in characters.  In his essay The Art of Fiction, he encourages writers to stay true to reality.  At the end of his long career, Henry James had written 22 novels, over 100 short stories, several plays, and many other pieces which included literary criticism and theater reviews.

Henry James was a master of creating highly developed characters and using different points of view to tell his stories.  Each of his works has contributed to modern literature and helped shape it into what it is today.
