About the Colorful Celebrations set: 10 stamps picturing Spanish papel picado (pierced paper) designs in different colors (light blue, orange, violet, or rose pink). Intended to celebrate a wide variety of occasions one might send mail for.
History the stamp represents: Crouched over a table and chiseling through layers of colorful paper, generations of Mexican artisans have perfected the art of papel picado. In addition to the creativity needed to design their artwork, having the right tools is imperative to creating pierced paper masterpieces.
As important tool for papel picado artists is the chisel, or fierritos. In fact, they usually have several different chisels in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some of the most popular are curved, half-round bars, hole punches, and blocks. The hammer is an essential tool as well. It drives the chisel through 50 or more layers of paper efficiently. Other items used to cut through the paper include scissors, awls, and punches. These tools, in various shapes and sizes, help make more ornate designs.
Below the layers of paper lies either a large wooden block or lead plate to absorb the pressure from the hammering. Passed down over generations, wood blocks scarred by decades of carving can tell a story of their own.
Of course, the most important tool in creating papel picado is the artist’s own creativity and focus. It takes a great deal of time, steady hands, and passion to create these works of art, which are a testament to their creators’ talent and dedication.
