About the Colorful Celebrations set: 10 stamps picturing Spanish papel picado (pierced paper) designs in different colors (light blue, orange, violet, or rose pink). Intended to celebrate a wide variety of occasions one might send mail for.
History the stamp represents: Like any art form, papel picado requires skill, patience, and time. This dedication leads to one of the world’s most beautiful and unique displays of artistry.
The process of creating papel picado begins with a design, which is usually specific to a holiday or celebration. Some elaborate designs may resemble lace, while others are more figurative. They can picture birds, flowers, angels, foliage, crosses, or even words. The design is placed on top of a stack of 50 or more sheets of tissue paper, which are carefully stapled together.
Artists then use a variety of chisels with different shaped tips to carve their design through the layers of paper. Working this way allows them to create a large number of identical designs in one step.
The intricate pieces may take artists several hours to complete. But once they are done, they have many individual papel picado for their celebration. Each design is separated from the stack and hung on a string, creating an impressive banner. Some are also hung from ceilings, creating a beautiful overhead tapestry of color and shapes.
Though papel picado are decorations created specifically for celebrations, the care and skill that goes into them makes each one a true work of art.
