U.S. # 5036a
2016 49¢ Imperforate Quilled Paper Heart
Love Series
Paper filigree, or quilling, is a centuries-old art technique which replaces paint, pencil, and clay with paper. Thin, colorful strips of paper are curled, crimped, bent, and glued to form beautiful and intricate three-dimensional designs. An art once reserved for upper-class ladies of leisure, quilling is now enjoyed by people of all walks of life.
Quilled designs are often used to decorate invitations and greeting cards. But Russian-born Yulia Brodskaya has taken the technique to new heights – pioneering a new purpose for the ancient art form.
One of the foremost quilling artists of the 21st century, Brodskaya found her passion in paper art. In 2008, the U.K.-based artist introduced what she calls “PAPERgraphic” to commercial advertising. Her highly detailed creations can be found in international ad campaigns for everything from coffee and perfume to events like Wimbledon. She also designed the 2016 USPS Love Series stamp, a colorful quilled paper heart.
Brodskaya’s designs stand on their own as fascinating works of art. Many are large, intricate pieces – their countless ribbons of paper forming a single image. Museums and private collectors snatch up her unique compositions almost as fast as she creates them.
The artwork for U.S. #5036 was created using a 15th century technique known as quilling. Artist Yulia Brodskaya cut strips of colorful paper, bent and glued them to create the vibrant image show on the stamp. The original 3-dimensional piece measured about 8” x 10”.
