2014 49¢ Philadelphia Warriors Uniform
Disenchanted with college basketball, Wilt Chamberlain left the University of Kansas after only three seasons with the Jayhawks. After spending a year with the Harlem Globetrotters, the Philadelphia Warriors eagerly drafted him in 1959 at the then-highest salary in pro basketball.
Chamberlain delivered. His rebounding and scoring ability took the Warriors to the 1960 Eastern Division finals against on-court rival, off-court friend Bill Russell and the Boston Celtics. Even though the Warriors lost the series, Chamberlain was named Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year.
Despite the accolades, Chamberlain’s rookie year almost sent him into retirement. The relentless guarding by opponents had worn him out. “Nobody loves Goliath,” he would say.
Luckily, a hefty salary raise kept Chamberlain in the game. He improved his already impressive statistics in his second season, scoring 32 percent of the team’s overall points. But in his third season with the Warriors, Chamberlain made history.
On March 2, 1962, the admittedly poor free-throw shooter hit 28 of 32 of his foul shots and scored over 50 percent from the field. Chamberlain totaled an unprecedented 100 points in that game alone, a record that stands unrivaled to this day.
Two Wilt Chamberlain stamps were issued, this one showing him in his Philadelphia uniform and one wearing his L.A. Lakers uniform. The extra tall stamps pay tribute to Chamberlain’s height – 7’ 1”.
