In the Southern United States, winter is often the only time to see certain birds, because they spend their summers up north. But not all birds migrate south. Even in cold northern climates, winter bird watching can provide some exciting sights. 

 

Finding birds in the winter can be an easy task. Flocks are no longer obscured by summer’s thick foliage and different species might congregate together in one foraging location when food sources are scarce. If one is willing to brave the elements, feathered winter residents can still be found in forests and along rivers and streams.

 

For those less adventurous, or those who prefer a cozy warm sofa, winter bird watching can be done from the comfort of home, as well. Successful “backyard birding” depends on consistently providing food, water, and shelter.

 

Offering different varieties of seeds draws a diverse population of birds to a feeder. Many birds, including cardinals and jays, like black oil sunflower seeds. Thistle seeds are a goldfinch favorite. And chickadees like safflower seeds. Once birds know a food source is reliable, they will come back again and again, brightening the gloomiest of winter days.

 

The cardinal design on this stamp was hand-sketched by Christine Roy then digitally manipulated. The artist said she chose this bird because “Cardinals have always seemed like a wonderful symbol of carrying on during winter.”
