U.S. # 4745
2013 46¢ 1967 Shelby GT-500
Muscle Cars
America on the Move Series

In 1965, auto designer Carroll Shelby began working with Ford Motor Company to produce a line of Mustang GT 350 models known as Cobras. Not built for comfort or ease of handling, the cars were road-racing champions unsuited for everyday driving. All that changed when Shelby produced the 1967 Shelby GT 500 – an adult sports car that combined a big-block engine with mature handling.

Among the changes were those in exterior styling. Sheet metal was replaced with fiberglass panels. A forward-arching nose piece formed a cowling for the quad headlights while the hood featured a larger air scoop divided by a functional air splitter. The trunk lid and tail piece went together seamlessly to make a racy aerodynamic spoiler, and the side louvers of the earlier models were replaced by scoops. In a nod to the powerful 428-cubic-inch engine and earlier handling problems, the ‘67 Shelby GT 500 was available with an automatic transmission, power brakes, and power steering. One magazine editor compared the car to a “purring, well-controlled tiger.”

But the men who engineered the Shelby GT 500 were well aware of its potential. To protect passengers, it became the first production car to feature a true rollover bar as well as a shoulder harness to supplement the lap-style seat belt.

Carl T. Herrman designed all five Muscle Car stamps, using the oil-on-hardboard paintings by artist Tom Fritz.
