2013 Priority & Express Mail Set, Plate Number Singles with Mr. Zip Logo on back
Mr. Zip Returns 50 Years After His First Appearance!
The ZIP code system introduced in 1963 is one of the biggest revolutions in mail delivery in US History. But, not everyone adapted quickly. And that’s where Mr. Zip comes in. The Post Office launched a massive advertising campaing, and Mr. Zip quickly became a "celebrity" – being featured in newspapers, TV and Radio.
One of Mr. Zip’s biggest goals was to appeal to children so they would grow up understanding zip codes. Mr. Zip even had his very own comic strip, board game, memorabilia, and toys.
The Mr. Zip craze lasted nearly two decades until the introduction of the zip+4 system in 1983. He quietly re-emerged in 2013 when the USPS put him on the back of the priority and express mail stamp sheets in honor of the 50th anniversary of the zip code system.
