2013 U.S. Commemorative Collection

The U.S. Postal Service released more than 100 new stamp designs in 2013, many were also issued in imperforate format.  Some stamps received attention by major news sources.

Perhaps the most talked about stamps featured one of the best-known errors in American stamp history – the Inverted Jenny.  The First Day of Issue ceremony for the souvenir sheet took place on opening day of the National Postal Museum’s new William H. Gross Stamp Gallery.

Stamps added to some ongoing series included the sixth Celebrating Lunar New Year stamp commemorating the Year of the Snake.  Muscle Cars proved to be a popular addition to the America on the Move Series.  The Civil War and War of 1812 Series also continued.  Tennis star Althea Gibson became the 36th person to be honored in the Black Heritage Series.  Five New England coastal lighthouses were the subjects of the sixth set of lighthouse stamps.  New wedding stamps were issued just in time for the summer season.

A new Music Icons Series was introduced honoring Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, and Texas-Mexican singer Lydia Mendoza.

Though not labeled a series, three stamps focused on African Americans’ struggle for civil rights – President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Rosa Parks, and the March on Washington, where Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

The holiday stamps began with the Eid issue marking two Muslim festivals.  As the end of the year approached, poinsettias, snowflakes, and gingerbread houses became the subjects of holiday stamps.
