It is easy to take a car’s tires for granted. But inside the tire, the air pressure is constantly changing. That can dramatically affect both driving safety and use of resources. Properly maintained tire pressure is an important part of driving safely, as well as traveling in a “green” fashion.
Tires come with manufacturing standards for proper inflation called “pounds per square inch” (p.s.i.). But a tire’s pressure is always changing, with a normal loss of about 3 p.s.i. per month. That makes it important to check the pressure frequently.
Underinflated tires sag under the vehicle’s weight, so there is more resistance from the road, and more energy needed to move the vehicle. This burns fuel unnecessarily and is a waste of both natural resources and money. Overinflated tires are rigid and do not have a good grip on the roadway. Both conditions can make driving hazardous. These tires also wear out faster than normal, requiring expensive replacement and disposal of the old tires. Neither situation is helpful to the environment.
Use of a good tire gauge (digital ones are best) on a weekly or monthly basis helps drivers keep their tires in top working order. That means fewer wasted resources, a safer ride, money saved, and a thumb’s up to environmentally friendly driving.
