Heating a home to 70 degrees keeps it nice and toasty in the winter.  But when nobody is home to enjoy the warmth, it is just wasted fuel and money.  Adjusting the thermostat is a great way to reduce use of non-renewable sources of energy.  This saves a considerable amount of money, as well.

Many buildings have adjustable thermostats that allow people to change the settings.  Lowering the setting by a single degree can reduce energy use by the furnace over 10% (some estimates place it at over 20%).  Lowering the thermostat when at work or asleep (one recommendation is 55 degrees at night) makes a big difference in usage.  A popular belief that it costs more in money and fuel to “re-heat” a home is actually a common misperception.

During the warm months, thermostats should be raised to reduce cooling costs.  Fans can make a body feel five degrees cooler, and help keep energy use down.  Wearing added layers of clothing in the cold months, and opening windows during the warm months, can also help moderate temperatures.

Programmable thermostats can be set (or installed) to make changes automatically, and to keep certain zones cooler or warmer as needed.  Their use saves money and cuts down on fuel consumption, an important factor in green living.
