People used to talk about having a “green thumb” for a person’s skill at growing things. Now that has been expanded to living a “green lifestyle,” which focuses on living in an environmentally friendly manner – to “Go Green.”
Between 1970 and 2010, America’s population grew by over 100 million people. That population boom has helped bring attention to our impact on the planet, called our “environmental footprint.” This footprint measures the sustainability of the resources we use, including oil and other fossil fuels, wood cut from forests, soil depletion, and even fresh water.
There is ongoing debate in both the scientific and political communities about the degree of mankind’s impact on our planet’s environment. Those discussions have helped increase public awareness, as our society has discovered there are many benefits to be gained from a greener lifestyle.
Those who support the green lifestyle believe this will offer certain advantages. Living more efficiently could prolong our resources for generations to come, as well as save money. Through practices such as conservation, recycling, and building with ecology-friendly plans and materials in mind, goals for a better life on this planet may be achievable.
In 2011, the United States Postal Service issued a 16-stamp set commemorating the benefits of living “green.” The stamps highlight simple ways people can conserve resources in their daily lives. They also reflect resource-saving practices followed by the Postal Service.
