This 1 Crown coin features an engraving of the World War II-era warship HNLMS Isaac Sweers, a Gerard Callenburgh-class destroyer built for the Royal Netherlands Navy. The Isaac Sweers was one of the ships that torpedoed and sank Italian cruisers Alberico da Barbian and Alberto da Giussano on December 13, 1942 at the Battle of Cape Bon. The ship also escorted a convoy (MW 8B) to Malta in January 1942, towed an incapacitated British destroyer to safety (along with her crew of 240 men), and helped rescue the crew of the Nieuw Zeeland after it was torpedoed by a German submarine. The Isaac Sweers was attacked and sunk by German submarine U-431 on November 13, 1942, off the coast of French North Africa.
