I remember watching Lassie and thinking, “What a beautiful dog she is!” We wondered if we could teach our collie, Teddy, the same tricks. A dog is often called man’s best friend, and that was the case in this long-running series. From 1954-74, the show focused on the relationship of an intelligent collie and her human friends. Loyal and protective, this canine companion constantly helped the humans out of trouble. Little Timmy found himself in a never-ending series of predicaments. Episodes often ended with a cliffhanger, leaving viewers wondering how this canine lady would save the day. The collie became a symbol of faithfulness and perseverence. Ironically, this “female” was played by a male dog.
