At eight years old, Lisa is the smartest member of her television family. Lisa is an outspoken environmental and animal rights activist, educating fans and winning critical acclaim for the show.
Lisa attends Springfield Elementary School, and the show pokes fun at America’s educational system. The teachers are unmotivated, the school is in disrepair, and the textbooks are obsolete. A genius, Lisa finds herself unchallenged and overlooked. Her hallmark is breaking into a saxophone solo during band class to demonstrate her musical talents. Instead of receiving praise for her skills, Lisa is thrown out for disturbing the class.
Lisa fights big businesses for polluting the environment and cutting down trees. She protests animal abuse by sheltering snakes in her house. Lisa demonstrates she is against wearing fur by throwing paint on a clown’s coat. As a Buddhist, Lisa is a supporter of the Free Tibet movement.
Lisa’s activism has won the TV show six Genesis Awards, given annually by the Humane Society of America, and seven Environmental Media Awards. In 2001, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) named Lisa one of the “Most Animal-Friendly TV Characters of All Time.”
