Marge is the glue that holds the family together. Although she can be a nag, Marge is the “moral voice” in a town that is often a little wicked.
Marge staged her first protest in high school, where she burned her bra at a feminist rally. Marge has since led a crusade to stamp out cartoon violence, close down a burlesque house, and ban the sale of sugar in Springfield.
In 1990, First-lady Barbara Bush said that the show was “the dumbest thing I had ever seen.” The show’s writers, posing as Marge, responded by writing a letter to Mrs. Bush. Marge said it was difficult to teach her children not to talk bad about others “...when the very First Lady in the country calls us not only dumb, but ‘the dumbest thing’ she ever saw.” Mrs. Bush wrote back asking Marge to forgive her “loose tongue.”
Marge is voiced by Julie Kavner, who rarely performs Marge’s voice in public because she believes “...it destroys the illusion. People feel these are real people.”
Although she is a fictional character, Marge ranked first on Entertainment Weekly’s list of top TV Moms. Marge was even included in Time magazine’s list of “10 Best Moms Ever.”
