Complete 2009 U.S. Commemorative Collection

The stamps of 2009 commemorate important Americans in entertainment, civil rights, and law as well as important milestones, celebrations, and more.

The 2009 stamp year began with the release of the Year of the Ox stamp, the second in the latest series of Lunar New Year stamps. The brightly colored stamp pictures a lion head traditionally worn by dancers in Chinese New Year parades.

The Black Heritage Series featured its 32nd African American in 2009 with the issue of the Anna Julia Cooper stamp. Cooper was an educator, author, feminist, and activist, noted for being the fourth African American woman to earn a doctorate degree. Other authors honored in 2009 included Edgar Allan Poe and Richard Wright. Poe earned acclaim as the creator of the detective novel and for his dark writing style. Wright, known for his graphic depictions of racism in the early 1900s, was commemorated as the 25th inductee into the Literary Arts Series.

America’s 16th President, Abraham Lincoln was remembered on a set of four stamps picturing the beloved leader at different periods in his life. Lincoln worked as a railsplitter in Indiana before moving to Illinois. He became a lawyer, politician, and U.S. President – led America through the Civil War. Twelve civil rights pioneers were also showcased in 2009 on a special stamp sheet marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

America’s favorite animated family, The Simpsons, were featured on a set of five stamps marking their 20th season in prime-time. The show is the first prime-time program to air for that duration.

The latest Love stamps, The King and Queen of Hearts, featured images taken from 18th century French playing cards on two stamps. Another popular series continued in 2009 with the addition of Gary Cooper as the 15th inductee into the Legends of Hollywood Series. Cooper gained acclaim for his strong, silent portrayals of cowboys in such Academy Award-winning movies as Sergeant York and High Noon.

New wedding stamp designs issued in 2009 featured elegant photographs of a wedding cake and a pair of wedding rings. The stamps were intended for use on wedding invitations and their enclosed reply cards.

A set of five Gulf Coast Lighthouse stamps issued in 2009 picture five lighthouses that have braved the stormy coasts between Texas and Florida. Some of these lighthouses faced off against such disastrous storms as Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. The third set of Flags of Our Nation stamps pictured the flags of Kentucky through Missouri as well as the U.S. flag waving over “amber waves of grain.”

Classic TV-lovers got a special treat in 2009 with the issue of 20 Early TV Memories stamps, showcasing such popular shows as I Love Lucy, Howdy Doody, Lassie, and The Ed Sullivan Show.

In 2009, three states’ anniversaries were celebrated on postage stamps: Oregon (150 years) and Hawaii and Alaska (50 years). And four Supreme Court Justices were remembered for their contributions to the American legal system and our understanding of the Constitution.

The popular Nature of America Series continued with the issue of the Kelp Forest stamp sheet, picturing more than 27 species of plants and animals known to inhabit this breathtaking underwater community.
