Flags of Our Nation
District of Columbia

Issue Date: September 2, 2008
City:
Washington, DC

The District of Columbia waited over a hundred years before establishing an official flag. The city often flew unofficial banners, such as the flag of the Washington, D.C., National Guard.

In 1920, a commission was formed to find a suitable design to represent our nation's capital. On October 15, 1938, a design created by graphic designer Charles A.R. Dunn was officially adopted as the flag of the District of Columbia. Inspired by George Washington's family coat of arms, the flag design consisted of three red stars (known as mullets) and two red bars.

The motto of the District of Columbia, Justitia Omnibus (Justice to All), was adopted on August 3, 1871, as part of the official seal of the District of Columbia.

The District of Columbia Flag stamp is part of the 2008 Flags of Our Nation Series.
