The four American Flag stamps show the Stars and Stripes flying at dawn, midday, dusk, and night. This was the first time flag definitives were produced only in coil format, not in booklets or panes.
Artist Laura Stutzman, who has painted flags many times in her commercial art career, created the images for the stamps. Each stamp is divided approximately in half diagonally by the flag. The flag is on the left, and the sky indicating the time of day is on the right.
