Clifton R. Wharton, Sr. (1899-1990) is one of six distinguished American diplomats pictured on a 2006 stamp sheet.
Clifton Wharton was the first African-American Foreign Service officer. In 1958, he became the first Black diplomat to lead a U.S. mission in Europe, and the first to become an ambassador in 1961.
