In 1778, Captain James Cook of the British Navy discovered the Hawaiian Islands. Although the islands remained independent under the rule of King Kamehameha and his successors, by the 1840s many American missionaries and traders had settled on the islands.
This stamp is from a sheet picturing rare “Hawaiian Missionary” stamps along with the famous “Dawson” cover.
