First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at Kennedy Space Center in Titusville, Florida.
About the Celebrate the Century series: The USPS launched the Celebrate the Century series in 1998 to mark the end of the 20th century and herald the arrival of the 21st. The series includes 10 sheets of 15 stamps (150 in total), with each honoring important moments from a different decade (1900s, 10s, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s). At the time of completion, it was the longest and most ambitious commemorative stamp series in US history.
History the stamp represents: The San Francisco 49ers were arguably the most dominant sports team of the 1980s. The team won Super Bowl championship games in 1982, 1985, 1989, and 1990. Their high-powered “west-coast” offense included some of professional football’s best players.
Coach Bill Walsh led the 49ers to three of their four Super Bowl victories. In 1982, they beat the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21; in 1985, the score was 38-16 over the Miami Dolphins; and the team beat the Bengals again in 1989, 20-16. George Seifert coached the team to a resounding 1990 victory over the Denver Broncos, 55-10.
Quarterback Joe Montana was one of the team’s most powerful players. He was collected, flexible, and reacted well under pressure. His partnerships with wide receivers Dwight Clark and Jerry Rice and running backs Roger Craig and Wendell Tyler were strong offensive weapons. Montana never threw an interception in a Super Bowl game, and he is the only player named Super Bowl’s most valuable player three times.
The San Francisco 49ers won their most dramatic Super Bowl victory in 1989. Montana threw a 10-yard toss to wide receiver John Taylor with just 34 seconds left in the game. This team’s many successes earned them the nickname, “Team of the 1980s.”
